Biographical / Historical
The Central Iowa Family Planning (CIFP) clinic opened in 1973 at 704 May St., Marshalltown, IA, and in 1988 at 717 5th Ave., Suite 4, Grinnell, IA. Providing both needs-based medical care and preventive and practical sexual education programs to the communities they served, the Central Iowa Family Planning clinic was often their patient’s only access to healthcare. Staff routinely examined patients from marginalized communities who were on Medicaid or had no health insurance. CIFP provided reliable access to Sexually Transmitted Disease screenings, birth control, and pregnancy tests. Serving six counties from its Marshalltown and Grinnell offices, CIFP relied on personal donations, grant funding, and limited health insurance reimbursements. CIFP was not affiliated with any national organization. When Medicaid was privatized and broken down into three individual companies in Iowa, Central Iowa Family Planning was forced to close both its clinics in 2016.
