Scope and Contents

The Sandy Pickup papers date from 1972 to 2000 and measure two feet in four boxes. The papers are arranged in four series: Personal, Activities, Photographs, and Artifacts. The Personal series contains Pickup’s correspondence, essays from her time at the University of Iowa, newspaper clippings about events in the Iowa City area, and information about her relationship with Tess Catalano. The Activities series includes materials from the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC), political protests and activism around racism, peace efforts, and women’s issues, as well as Pickup’s engagement with local LGBTQ+ activism. The Photographs series is made up of two albums along with loose photographs. The albums consist of a collection of group photographs of Pickup and friends and a commemorative album for a production of “Shrew” a feminist production of “The Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare with an all-female cast. The loose photographs range from family and friends, to a photography class and Grace and Rubie’s Rats, a softball team representing the local women’s restaurant Grace and Rubies. The Artifacts series mostly contains items from Grace and Rubie’s Rats; a cap, a ball, and a glove. There are also two framed awards for the quarterly journal Common Lives/Lesbian Lives from the Chicago Women in Publishing and the Gay Press Association.
