Biographical / Historical
John Stephen Molloy was born in Deer Creek, Webster County, Iowa in 1885 as the youngest of seven surviving children. His father, David William Molloy, and mother, Maria Mitchell Molloy, met when Mitchell’s family moved from Pennsylvania to Deer Creek to a farm adjacent to the Molloy farm. The couple was married in 1865 when David returned from serving in the 32nd Iowa Infantry. In 1898 when John was thirteen years old, his father passed away , forcing the sale of the farm and the relocation of the family to Fort Dodge, Iowa. John Stephen Molloy married Georgia Lenore Madison, a junior high Latin teacher, in 1912, and they would have six children. Molloy worked for nearly 20 years in the gypsum mining industry in Fort Dodge and Centerville, Iowa. Following the closure of mines after the 1929 stock market crash, Molloy worked in a variety of manufacturing and sales jobs until his death in 1946.
