Biographical / Historical

Ann Stromquist is one of four daughters born to Mary (Morrissett) and James P. Mullin. From 1966 to 1968, she volunteered with the American Friends Service Committee in Tanzania alongside Shel Stromquist; the two married in Tanzania and eventually settled in Iowa City, where they raised three children. Both Ann and Shel were involved in civil rights activism, and Ann collected these two posters related to Native American communities and organizing in the Dakotas while engaged in solidarity work with those groups.
