Scope and Contents

In Nov 1973, Finlay writes to Thorpe that he had hoped to start Archaic Carrier following Thorpe's completion of Torso Aircraft Carrier but now has decided to collaborate with him in making a game entitled, Pacific, that will be carved from wood as the next project. The letter includes information on playing this game like draughts (checkers) and instructions on its components. Thorpe writes back in Dec 1973 with his understanding of what is required from him and suggestions for wooden materials in making the pieces. In Dec 1973, Finlay writes to Thorpe that his suggestions for making Pacific seem excellent and includes further details he wishes done on its components. Thorpe replies two weeks later with further details and also sends samples of woods. A few days later, Finlay sends further instructions and complements Thorpe, "you are a continual reminder that people can collaborate in a resonable way --- something I am only too often driven to doubt by other experiences..." (Examples are SAC & Kelso projects, Archives of which are held by the Sackner Archive). Thorpe writes to Finlay in Jan 1974 with his understanding of the requested modifications of Pacific and expresses happiness in working with Finlay, "Each detail carefully considered in its own right and in the context of the whole." Finlay writes back accepting plan, which is acknowledged by Thorpe. In June, Thorpe asks Finlay's guidance on a few technical details of the game. In another letter, he recounts a telephone chat with Finlay with regard to his delay in making the game. Finlay reponds with encouragement. In July 1974, Thorpe mentions a June card and a July letter from Finlay (not in included in this Archive) that surprised and shocked him. The contents related to delay in finishing Pacific. Thorpe writes back that the fabrication of Pacific has been complex but that he hopes to finish it in August. In a councilatory vein, Finlay replies two days later with his interpretation of the delay and reasons for the misunderstanding. Thorpe replies in the same vein mentioning that circumstances beyond his control occurred. Finlay receives part of the Pacific pieces in July and provides reasons for urgency in having the game, viz., wanted to show it to summer visitors and to produce a cardboard set for sale. He acknowledges that Thorpe's letter was very understanding of their disagreement as to time of delivery. Thorpe sends the rest of the game in August and Finlay replies, "The Pacific set is really superb...the only drawback to the set, is, that it is really too beautiful to play with..." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
