Hertzberg Bindery/Library Binding Service Records

Abstract

Scrapbooks, photographs, paper sample books, and other materials documenting the history of the Hertzberg Bookbindery in Des Moines (established 1920). The company was renamed Library Binding Service by the late 1930s and continues to operate as three divisions under that general name (usually abbreviated to LBS).

Records for a Des Moines company that began as a bookbindery in 1920 and has migrated to supplying bookbinding materials (particularly fabrics and pre-made endsheets) to the bookbinding trade. Collection include scapbooks documenting business activities and sample (display) books of printed binding fabrics which the firm specialized in from the late 1930s through the 1950s.

William Hibbard Papers

Scope and Contents This collection contains the papers and musical works of renowned University of Iowa composer, conductor and musician William Hibbard. Series 1 of the collection - the largest portion - consists of musical scores and related materials (such as drafts and notes) for most of Hibbard's oeuvre. Many of the scores are original manuscripts, but also included are edited photocopies, performance copies, bound and published versions. Some scores are full, while others are parts for individual instruments. Series 2 consists of Hibbard's personal papers included are correspondence, programs and reviews, handwritten jottings from Hibbard on a number of different musical concepts and patterns, and class materials, that is, materials relating to classes taught by Hibbard at the University of Iowa. Scope and Contents

The Historical Papers collection of the University of Iowa Archives consists mainly of articles and personal essays that pertain to University of Iowa history. The papers, mostly unpublished, address a wide variety of topics, including college and department histories, faculty biographies, academic programs, political activism, and social life. Authors are faculty, alumni, students, historians, and others associated with the University, and the papers are arranged alphabetically by name of author. Donors have submitted these papers to the Archives on numerous occasions.
