Artists' Television Network Records

Abstract

Video by and about artists assembled for broadcast on the New York City cable networks between 1976 and 1984. The project was coordinated by Jaime Davidovich and the collection includes the cablecast material, in many cases edited in various ways for any of several anthology shows, as well as paper records. A portion of the collection has been re-recorded and is available in VHS format; a few pieces have been transcribed to DVD; and a growing number have been re-recorded digitally in DVCam and DVD versions.

Artwords and Bookworks Papers

Abstract

Co-curated by Judith Hoffberg and Joan Hugo, Artwords and Bookworks was one of the largest exhibition of artists' books and ephemera to take place during the 1970s. Comprised of experimental works by approximately six hundred contributors, the exhibition presented a diverse and provocative sampling of this alternative art form.

Asao Shimura-Gary Frost Correspondence

Scope and Contents Shimura wrote to Frost in 1977 to request the latter bind a small edition of a book. This led to a continuing correspondence (only Shimuras letters to Frost are present here) in which Shimura reports on his extensive travel, attendance at international paper conferences, and his international public speaking tours (including visits to Chicago and New York and stays with Frost). At the beginning of the correspondence, Gary Frost was a book conservator at the Newberry Library; by its end he had moved to New York City as a conservation instructor in the Columbia University Library School. As a means of introducing Shimura more widely to an U.S. audience, Frost reviewed several of his miniature books in the April 1983 issue of Fine Print. The letter files include printed and ephemeral materials documenting Shimuras work and travel. Autograph Collection

Scope and Contents Two autograph collections already in Special Collections, those of Charles Alrich and Peggy LeBold, were combined into one collection in 2016. Each one was sparsely described so their catalog entries did not tell the full story of the riches inside. Hundreds of letters from well-known individuals, prized for the signatures at the bottom, have been collected and preserved. Charles Aldrich was active in archives in Iowa, helping to establish the Iowa Historical Department. A newspaperman, he founded the Hamilton Freeman paper in Webster City, Iowa. He also had an interest in ornithology and was a founding member of the American Ornithological Union. He broke his collection down into the following seven categories: Authors, Artists and Editors; Iowa Autographs; Reformers, Philanthropists, Educators, Clergymen, Scholars; Rossetti Collection; Scientists; Soldiers, Sailors, and Explorers; and Statesmen and Lawyers.
