ZINES

 Series
Identifier: 1
Scope and Contents From the Collection: This collection contains zines, mini-comic books and other amateur and/or independent publications, copies of which were placed in the Zine Machine in the Main Library, University of Iowa. The Zine Machine was established by then graduate student, Jessica White. The nature of zines precludes a simple description of their subject matter: zines are expressions of their authors' individual creativity and worldviews, and thus the subject from zine to zine, or even within an individual zine, can vary greatly. Subjects may include music and/or other cultural activities, or any number of social and political issues. For some, the subject of the publication is, simply, the life and mind of the creator. Zines may include drawings, essays, poetry, articles, interviews, or numerous other types of artistic and literary expression. The box list, below, is organized by series. Folder titles are listed for each box. Folders which house multiple issues display those titles indented. ...

Scope and Contents From the Collection:

The zines in the Stewart Collection constitute a wide variety of subjects and concerns, Many are perzines, that is,"personal" zines that describe the author's own experiences, thoughts and feelings. Others consist of comic or other types of art, and still other zines are designed as outlets for political or social expression. Many zines encompass more than one type or style, reflecting the fluidity of the zine as a product of creative endeavor.

Also included are issues of several publications dedicated to the review of other zines, including Zine World and Best Zine Ever.
