The exhibition consisted of 30 calligraphic poems cut from paper, numbers 19 to 25 were later published in a portfolio, "Siete Caligramas," a work also held by the Sackner Archive. A major part of this book deals with the craft of calligraphy. Another section is concerned with the origins of calligraphy beginning with Egyptian hieroglyphics and commencing through various alphabets such as Cretian, Phoenician, Etruscan, Greek, and Latin to the Roman. Another section deals with cursive scripts. The book deals with individual European calligraphers from the Renaissance onward with a few Americans such as William Dwiggens mentioned. This review of Xu Bing's exhibition "Word Play" considers written language as performance. Bing's well known work "Books from the Sky" is installed at the Sackler Gallery in Washington and consists of "an architectural environment made entirely of books, wall panels and enormous paper scrolls that hang from the ceiling like a canopy. Every surface is covered with words, printed from thousands of wood block plates hand-carved by the artist.
