Scope and Contents The Hoiuedard exhibtion presented 26 plastic poems, 26 typewriter poems, and 13 one sided plastic laminated poems with titles. None of these Houedard poems were titled. Gu ardian Obituary for Audrey Barker: Audrey Barker, who has died aged 69, was an inspiration to the development of the young as artists, especially through her work and thoughts about people with disabilities. She was born in West Ham, in London's docklands, and during the second world war was evacuated to a farm where she contracted tuberculosis from untreated milk. This led to crippling bone damage and eight years in hospital. She missed much formal education, but she read avidly, gaining a scholarship to East Ham Grammar School for Girls in 1944, later attending Walthamstow School of Art (1950-55) and then Leicester College of Art for a teacher training year. She exhibited her paintings widely from 1953 in group shows such as Young Contemporaries, the Royal Academy summer shows, the New English Art club and...

GLOUP (GLOUcestershire grouP) signifies name given by Jonathan Williams to group of concrete poets living in the west of England, mainly in Gloustershire, including Dom Sylvester Houedard, John Furnival and Kenhelm Cox. WOUP (Westminster grOUP) is name given by Bob Cobbing and Peter Mayer to group of concrete poets living in London, mainly in the city of Westminster, including Cobbing, Mayer and Tom Edmonds. This anthology presents five works by each the poets. One copy has a yellow papercard cover, the other an orange one with a tear. Tom Edmonds who died at age 27 years was a member of the group; the Sackner Archive holds three of his typewriter drawings. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Dom Sylvester Houedard's introduction to the catalogue is printed directly from his typescript with handwritten additions as it "arrived too late to typeset due to unreliable postmonk at the abbey." Cox's "Suncycle," in the motorised edition, was displayed in this exhibition. A non-motorised version is held by the Sackner Archive. Stored with Kenelm Cox's portfolio "A Memorial Folder." Houedard begins letter with "i always seem to be emptying the commode when you appear on the steamradio - the cuba scene came over well...He also writes "they are doing my ballet sometime - roundhouse? the slab? - called 'the cosmic typewriter - a somantic diversion." This represents a posthumous homage to Dom Sylvester Houedard from John Furnival who reprinted the poet's most famous poems and included a photographic silkscreened portrait as well as two photographs of the poet. Contains a tribute page by Marina Warner which she begins with "A letter from dom Sylvester Houedard was an archive (though always succinct), a poem (of an unusual kind), and, sometimes, a personal message of touching kindness..." The hands of this clock-like object each have a letter at their ends that spells, "Sylvester" after the poet Dom Sylvester Houedard. However, the arrangement of the gears which staggers the letters from ever lining up to form this word. The background creates a subtle Moire effect as the hands move across it. The clock was made by Kenelm Cox on behalf of Dom Sylvester Houedard. According to William Allen, bookseller, it was a surprise gift from Cox to Houedard. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
