Scope and Contents This catalogue, edited by Robert A. Sobieszek, curator of photography at LACMA, was issued for an exhibition in 1996. It emphasizes the importance and influence of the painted and poetic works as well as the life of William Burroughs and his collaborator, Brion Gysin. In his preface Sobieszek writes that "Burroughs is far more than a writer of imaginative prose and speculative fiction. His revolutionary literary tactics have led him to margins of activity where genres cease to matter, where the distinctions between words and images blend together, where paragraphs become filmic montage, and where a shotgun blast is the same as a painting. At the core of Burroughs's art is the 'cut-up' technique that he and Brion Gysin developed following the appearance of Naked Lunch. Scope and Contents This publication is edited by John Herschend and Will Rogan. Kota issue utilized the entire THING. It was our first issue in which the issue itself was the whole. Much of Kota's work has been about interpretation and modes of translation. And his contribution to THE THING was not an exception to this. His issue consisted of the standard THING box stamped in Cyrillic (Russian), a letter from the editor translated in to Mandarin, and a simple white cotton baseball cap with Arabic Text embroidered onto the front. Subscribers were only given a very small clue as to what the translation might be (a URL in English, buried in the Mandarin text). The result for many became a search for meaning and an interaction with a text that had symbolic feel but little relevance to their daily lives (unless they spoke the languages). The text of the pamphlet deals with a bad movie entitiled "Garden State." The text laser etched into the wood block deals with the purchase and cutting of an onion. Kine states in the pamphlet that her object is a cutting board and recommends that the more the board is used, the less the text can be read, and if all goes as planned, "the quieter the ghosts of meals past will become."
