This is a fine historic example of pre-poesia visiva. Tola belonged to Gruppo Studio, a Genovese group of artists founded in 1958 and still active in 2003 (see exhibition catalogue). This work represents one of Tola's "Wall Poems" as he called them at that time. Wikipedia: uigi Tola ( Genoa , October 5 1930 - Genoa , 25 June 2014 ) was an artist and poet Italian . Tola was one of the greatest exponents of Visual Poetry Italian. Active mainly in Genoa, where he founded the cultural centers The Porch, The Carbaga. The text in Italian and Ligurian has its title taken from Joyce's Finnegan's Wake. The recto depicts a large eye collaged from newspapers of several languages and states "The eye is the hand that catches the world and gives it back to the word from which has come into being writing."
