Biography

The Helen Caldicott Community School was an alternative school in Iowa City named for Dr. Helen Caldicott, an Australian physician who toured the United States advocating for nuclear disarmament. The school, located in a house on Bowery Street, served a small number of elementary-aged students in the early 1980s. In 1984, the school’s group CAN-DO (Children Acting for Nuclear Disarmament) produced a play entitled “The Cricket in the Nuclear Bomb Patch.”
