Biography

The Hard Won, Not Done 19th Amendment Centennial Commemoration was a project-based organizing committee based in the state of Iowa. The group developed and administered a program of events and initiatives to memorialize the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the amendment granting women the right to vote in the United States. The project was chaired by Doris Kelley, representing the League of Voters of Iowa; the fundraising chair was Mary Ellen Miller, representing the 50/50 in 2020 organization. Many events scheduled for the year of the anniversary (2020) had to be postponed or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Completed initiatives included an oral history of Iowa women legislators project (see IWA1278), which was spearheaded by Jean Lloyd-Jones and organized by her and her fellow members of the 50/50 in 2020 board. Other events included sponsored speeches, concerts and plays; the creation and distribution of a women's history calendar; and a successful fundraising campaign to build a replica suffrage wagon to be displayed at various Iowa museums and community centers.
