Biography

Doris Merker was born in 1917. She attended Southeastern High School in Detroit, Michigan and earned a degree in political science from the University of Michigan. She was married to Clyde F. Kohn, chair of the geography department at the University of Iowa, with whom she had two children. She was involved in several organizations in Iowa City, including the University Club, Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Friends of the Iowa Public Broadcasting Network. She wrote several musicals, sometimes in collaboration with Mary Kramer, who later became an Iowa state legislator and U.S. ambassador. One of these musicals, "Who Killed Lake Erie?" on the topic of ecology, was published by Generals Words and Music, a Neil Kjos company, and was performed at several local high schools. Another, "Good Night!! Ladies," on women's history, was performed by the University Club in 1975 with a cast that included Jean Lloyd-Jones and Janet Shipton.
