Biographical / Historical
The musical "Good Night!! Ladies" was written by Doris Kohn and Mary Kramer in 1974 and first staged for the University Club's May breakfast meeting on May 6, 1975. The University Club was a social club originally for women faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Iowa, which was later opened to anyone with an interest in the University and the Iowa City community. The performance was presented in celebration of International Women's Year. The musical was later performed at the Vets Auditorium by the Junior League of Des Moines, with Mary Kramer accompanying on the piano. Parts of the musical were also performed as a fundraiser for Mary Kramer during her first campaign for the Iowa legislature in 1990. Members of the original cast included women who later became prominent in Iowa City and statewide politics, including Jean Lloyd-Jones and Janet Shipton. The show presents vignettes from women's history and includes songs about Carrie Chapman Catt, interactions between white settler and Indigenous women in early Iowa history, Rosie the Riveter, and homemakers.
