Biography

Born in 1935 in Burlington, Mary Kramer grew up in Iowa City and received a bachelors in piano performance and a masters degree in education from the University of Iowa. After working as a teacher and school administrator, she became a personnel and HR professional for companies including Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. In 1990, she ran as a Republican to represent parts of the Des Moines area in the Iowa Senate and won. Kramer served Iowa Senate District 41 from 1991-1993, District 27 from 1993-2003, and District 30 from 2003-2004, when she left office to serve as an ambassador to Barbados under the George W. Bush administration.
