Scope and Contents
John Maizels is the editor of Outsider Magazine and a practicing artist whose themes feature untranslatable hieroglyphics and assemblages incorporating surrealistic, whimsical creatures. Examples of these works are held by the Sackner Archive. In the introduction to this book by Roger Cardinal, Jean Dubuffet is prominently mentioned as bringing the importance of Outsider Art to the contempory art public. This profusely illustrated book depicts several examples of Outsider Art that have great affinities to works done by non-outsiders held by the Sackner Archive. Thus, drawings of squat, human-like figures done by Don Sylvester Houedard in the 1950's are similar to those done by Cesar Lombroso in 1864 (p.12). Gary Goldstein's "Molieres Ausgewahlte Werke" of 1989, an artist book in which painted abstract and primative human portraits are superimposed over the pages of the text of this printed German book recall a book done by Marcel Reja in 1907 (p.12).
