Custodial History

A colophon on folio 232r reads: Rubricado finiri [?] sub [annis?] d[omi]no 1400 in die 1 [?]. The remnants of a chain attachment can be seen at the head of the lower cover, as well as a repair from the chaining on the inside of the back cover. A label on the spine in a later hand indicates a shelf mark, possibly ‘74.’ These two details, as well as worm damage in the covers, match those of another manuscript, xMMs.Se4, which was purchased along with this manuscript for the University of Iowa Special Collections in 1968 by Frank Paluka, from a student. According to Paluka, the student's father had won two books in a poker game in World War II. These two books are of a similar subject (both are groups of sermons), were held in the same library at the same time, and ended up together in World War II; however, more information about provenance is uncertain at this time.

Binding

Original, laced-in wooden board binding with leather cover (coming off in layers); vellum paste downs on the interior cover. Alum-tawed clasps coming out from the back cover only and held in with small brass square plates. Evidence of corresponding nails or clasps in the middle of the front cover. Two holes in the top back cover that once held an apparatus for a chain, indicating that this came from a chained library. Spine is uncovered except for modern repairs at the head and tail. Pamela Spitzmueller believes this may be the oldest original binding in the University of Iowa Libraries collection.
