Model 1840 Non Commissioned Officers' Sword (M 1840 NCO)
Manufactured by Ames Manufacturers in Chicopee, Massachusetts
Inspector: George W. Chapin (G.W.C.)
Records show George W. Chapin inspecting swords in 1964-65, he inspected firearms prior to that. Records have been found of George W. Chapin inspecting M 1840 NCO swords in 1964 from Ames Manufacturers, and also found a record of a him inspecting a M 1840 NCO sword for Mansfield and Lamb in 1965. This sword we have has the Ames manufacturers stamp, thus there is good reason to believe it is from 1864.
The standard make for this model had a 31 inch blade. This particular sword is non-standard with a 32 inch blade (from tip to hand guard).
--This model of sword was carried by sergeants in the Mexican-American war (1846-1848) and the American Civil War
--Ames Manufacturers supplied the Union in the Civil War, so it is highly likely that this sword was used by a Union Sergeant.
