Scope and Contents

Finlay begins this project in Jan-Feb 1972 with a letter to M. Harvey explaining that he wants to redo Wave/Rock for Stonypath, first constructed and then destroyed for the park at Dunfernline. He supplies a sketch for its placement. Then there ensues a correspondence from members of S.A.C. (Dunbar, Buchanan) to Finlay about funding this project and Finlay's comments. From July-Aug 1972, Finlay expresses disappointment with the Scottish Arts Council response siting for the sculpture mentioning his failed Zulu film project. In Aug 1972, Finlay contacts Harvey to make the drawing for Wave/Rock & provides detailed instructions for a concrete bridge, 16 feet in length with letters incised into tiles. Harvey responds to this directive in September. Finlay receives the drawing and notes variance with his instructions that must be corrected. This does not appear to be a major problem. In Sep, Murray writes Finlay about its fabrication. The correspondence between Finlay and Buchanan of the Scottish Arts Council toward the end of 1972 deals with business arrangements and other details. In early 1973, there is an exchange of letters between Finlay and S.A.C. regarding the architectural structure of the sculpture. The Stirling site has fallen through, a disappointment to Finlay, who supplies drawings to the S.A.C. Culzean County Park is agreed to but later rejected by the Trust. Steedman submits architectural drawings for placement of Wave/Rock. Although Finlay is initially pleased, endless suggestions from the Scottish Arts Council irritate Finlay who voices concern with proceeding further. In May 1973, an exasperated Finlay fires off an angry letter to the S.A.C. regarding their inability to comprehend his artistic workings, e.g., proposing to drop a 2 ton sculpture on a site without doing drawings to ascertain visual impact. Graeme Murray writes a letter to S.A.C. in support of Finlay's views. Steedman visits Finlay to show him the concrete samples for Wave/Rock, a point of contention, and reproachment takes place. This deal sours since Finlay is not shown the final samples of materials. In Sept. 1973, Finlay bitterly complains to the S.A.C. for lack of architectural sketches for him to review and approve. He brings up the role of the S.A.C. condoning Fulcrum Press' publication of "The Dancers..." which he disavowed as a first edition. There is an exchange of letters between Finlay & Lord Haig about Finlay's dispute with the S.A.C., the latter trying to negotiate a compromise. Harvey writes a letter to S.A.C. to support Finlay's contentions. By end 1973, the project is still on hold. In Jan 1974, Buchanan (S.A.C.) indicates that in addition to siting of Wave/Rock at Stonypath, a 2nd version will be cast in concrete for Haddington & Livingston New Town. By April, Finlay still has not received sketches, siting and specifications, and again erupts in anger with Steedman's architectural delays; he requests his firing from the project in a handwritten note. In August, Finlay writes to Buchanan on a new letterhead, "Society For The Protection Of The Arts Against The Arts Council. In Aug 1974, Buchanan (S.A.C.) writes to Graeme Murray that Finlay wants to cancel the Wave/Rock project and that he will keep the tiles in storage. Finlay corresponds with the architects in Livingston who apparently accept the sculpture as the correspondence closes in Nov. 1974. A illustration from a magazine of the sandblasted glass version and the Steedman initial architectural drawings as blue prints are also included in this archive. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
