Scope and Contents

This text is part of a series entitled "Cultural Memory in the Present." Schwenger analyzed and developed the the theme relating to literary visualization of texts in the following chapters: Possessed by Words. Dream Book, Seeing the Forest for the Trees, Painters of Reading, Framing the Fantasm, and A Politics of Visualization. In Painters of Reading, Schwenger describes the works of Tom Phillips and the Lettrists, Maurice Lemaitre, Isador Isou and Roland Sabatier. The word "fantasm" is taken from French psychoanalysis and can be applied to a range of visualizations. In English, fantasm is both ghost and image in the mind. Therefore mental image, dream, fantasy and hallucination are all involved in the experience of reading and writing fiction. In his acknowledgements, Schwenger writes, "a grant from Mount St. Vincent University allowed me to spend a week at the Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry in Miami Beach, in pursuit of what became Chapter 4 of this book. The riches of the Sackners' collection, combined with their generosity and knowledge, made this week not just useful but positively incandescent." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
