Scope and Contents The theme of this book is the 2000 Presidential election, particularly in Florida and the controversy in counting the ballots in the contest between George W. Bush and Albert Gore. Actual reports from the media are reprinted in handstamped texts relating to the issues of missing ballots, miscounted ballots, turning black voters away form the polls, and quotations from Jeb Bush, Jefferson, Shakespeare. Bush is refered to as Dubya and Gore is compared to a robot. Secretary of State Katherine Harris is pictured as being separated at birth from Ozzy Osbourne, the wacky Rock Music singer.. Warren Christopher, Secretary of State in Clinton's cabinet is pictured as being separated from birth from Kukla (of Kukla, Fran and Ollie televosion show). Neither political party is spared satirical treatment by Goswell including the United States Supreme Court that is pictured under the heading, "The Judicial Putsch: How the U.S. Supreme Court Decided the Election." Scope and Contents As with "The George Book" held by the Sackner Archive, Goswell has created another timeless impression of the American political scene with leanings toward the left. The collage consists of six hinged panels done in an accordion style. The technique of making the collage is reminiscent of the paste-ups of Jesse Collins. Proceeding from left to right, the following images and texts are presented among others: 1) Nixon rising from his coffin, 2) Rick Santorum, senator from Pennsylvania in priest's garb because of his anti-abortion stand, 3) The Allegheny National Forrest, an ancient old growth forrest near Erie where recently logging has been proposed, 4) Dole and a list of political contributors with rewards they received including Julio Gallo, Archer Daniels Midland, 5) unflattering images of politicians of the Christian right, 6) Bill Clinton with an inked epithet reading "I am the Lord Jesus Christ + I will solve all your problems + Believe in me," 6) announcement of the sale of...

Goswell writes in a letter to Marvin Sackner about her gift, "They are actually part of some books in progress. I thought you'd have some fun with them." The theme of the "Survival Manual" describes what you can do, including Watch Out, Build a Shelter, Duck and cover, Pack a Kit, and a post office cancelled stamp.
