Scope and Contents The historic introduction of Jacques Donguy deals with the experiences of concrete poetry since 1953 beginning with Gomringer and the de Campos brothers up to contemporary times. The anthology follows an international bibliography, constructing the first panorama of this art of textual, sound and visual experimentation. The origin of the Sackner Archive is described as follows: The Ruth and Marvin Sackner Archive of Concrete and Visual Poetry of Miami in the United States began in 1975, following their discovery of the work of Tom Phillips. They became interested at first in the Russian Avant Garde, then in 1979, they discovered the Anthology of Concrete Poetry of Emmett Williams. Departing from there, Marvin Sackner has not stopped acquiring books and works of poets included in this anthology. This archive has given a place for exhibitions and may be compared to the Jean Brown Archives, purchased in 1986 by the Getty, and to the Hans Sohm Archives, now in the Stuttgart Museum....

Scope and Contents Publisher: Digital poetry is a rapidly developing genre in the arts, marked by the most recent developments in media technology. Illustrating and reflecting the use of languages and sign systems in the symbol machine computer and in digital networks, digital poetry denotes creative, experimental, playful, or even critical language art via programming, multimedia, animation, interactivity, and net communication. P0es1s features contributions to an international symposium at Erfurt University that vividly explore changes in the notions of text and poetry, reception and authorship. Essays, manifestoes, and detailed analyses by researchers and artists make for a fundamental handbook, introducing this new art and illustrating its present state of discourse. This book is published on the occasion of the first extensive exhibition featuring international positions of digital poetry in installations as well as Internet and CD-ROM productions. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth...

Scope and Contents John Maizels is the editor of Outsider Magazine and a practicing artist whose themes feature untranslatable hieroglyphics and assemblages incorporating surrealistic, whimsical creatures. Examples of these works are held by the Sackner Archive. In the introduction to this book by Roger Cardinal, Jean Dubuffet is prominently mentioned as bringing the importance of Outsider Art to the contempory art public. This profusely illustrated book depicts several examples of Outsider Art that have great affinities to works done by non-outsiders held by the Sackner Archive. Thus, drawings of squat, human-like figures done by Don Sylvester Houedard in the 1950's are similar to those done by Cesar Lombroso in 1864 (p.12). Gary Goldstein's "Molieres Ausgewahlte Werke" of 1989, an artist book in which painted abstract and primative human portraits are superimposed over the pages of the text of this printed German book recall a book done by Marcel Reja in 1907 (p.12). Scope and Contents It should be noted that Bohn does not differentiate concrete poetry (words only in Sackner's definition) from visual poetry (integrated words and images in Sackner's definitions). Bohn also includes a chapter on digital poetry. The back cover reads the following. "Visual poetry can be defined as poetry that is meant to be seen. Combining painting and poetry, it attempts to synthesize the principles underlying each discipline. Visual poems are immediately recognizable by their refusal to adhere to a rectilinear grid and by their tendency to flout their plasticity. In contrast to traditional poetry, they are conceived not only as literary works but also as works of art. Although they continue to provide visual cues that aid in deciphering the text, they function simultaneously as visual compositions. Whether the visual elements form a rudimentary pattern or whether they constitute a highly sophisticated design, they transform the poem into a picture. Reading Visual Poetry examines...

Scope and Contents The Sackner Archive lent Houedard typewriter poems for reproduction in this book.AMAZON.COM: "Lori Emerson examines how interfaces"”from today's multitouch devices to yesterday's desktops, from typewriters to Emily Dickinson's self-bound fascicle volumes"”mediate between writer and text as well as between writer and reader. Following the threads of experimental writing from the present into the past, she shows how writers have long tested and transgressed technological boundaries.Reading the means of production as well as the creative works they produce, Emerson demonstrates that technologies are more than mere tools and that the interface is not a neutral border between writer and machine but is in fact a collaborative creative space. Reading Writing Interfaces begins with digital literature's defiance of the alleged invisibility of ubiquitous computing and multitouch in the early twenty-first century and then looks back at the ideology of the user-friendly graphical user...
