Biography

Jesse Singerman came to the University of Iowa in 1967, where she earned a BS in Psychology in 1970 and an MA in Clinical Psychology in 1974. In 1994 she earned an MBA from the University of Chicago. Singerman volunteered at the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City, Iowa in the early 1970s. She separated from the Clinic in 1974 to form HERA Psychotherapy Group with three other women, Ana Eisbach, Melissa Farley, and Roxie Tullis. HERA practiced radical feminist psychotherapy. They offered group and individual therapy, and held workshops, classes, and problem-solving groups. Jesse Singerman was also active in various political causes in the 1970s and 1980s. She was involved in the Central American Solidarity Committee, Women’s Pentagon Action, and the Black Hills Survival Gathering; HERA was a sponsor or participant in all of these groups. Additionally, Singerman was involved in other Native American rights and anti-nuclear causes. Singerman left HERA around 1984 and went on to become the president and CEO of Blooming Prairie Cooperative Warehouse, a natural and organic food distribution business.
