Scope and Contents
The Jesse Singerman papers date from 1973 to 1985 and measure 7.5 linear inches in two boxes. They are arranged in two series: HERA Psychotherapy Group (1973-1983) and Political activism (1976-1985).
The HERA Psychotherapy Group series includes information on the formation of HERA, and materials documenting HERA’s statement of purpose and radical feminist theory of psychotherapy. This series also includes information, schedules, and photographs relating to workshops and classes held by HERA; these include multiple anger workshops and bodywork classes. Materials from the HERA sponsored Midwest Radical Psychotherapy Conferences are also included, as well as documents relating to the Church of the Holy Mother – which grew out of HERA.
The Political activism series contains materials relating to the Central American Solidarity Committee, which HERA was heavily involved with; there are flyers for, photographs of, and information about their 1984 Artist’s Call event. This series also includes documents pertaining to Women’s Pentagon Action, an anti-nuclear activist group which HERA participated in. There are also materials relating to the 1980 Black Hills Survival Gathering, a gathering in protest of nuclear energy and weapons and in support of Native American rights, which HERA participated in. This series also includes materials regarding other causes Singerman was involved with during the 1970s and 1980s, like early Emma Goldman Clinic documents and various other feminist causes.
