Fragments of a Shattered Mirror, 1963

Scope and Contents

According to Kent Taylor in a personal communication (1997) to the Sackners, this was d.a levy's first book. Further, he believes that "Dave" in the inscription was Dave Williams, a boy friend of Taylor's first wife, levy's cousin, Joan. Several copies were destroyed from the run and Jim Lowell estimated that only 10-15 copies remained intact. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

According to Kent Taylor in a personal communication (1997) to the Sackners, this was d.a levy's third book. The individual pages comprising the book are printed with different colored inks but all pages are the same dimensions. The cover is a light gray with the title printed on three lines. This is the first printing of the book. The Sackner Archive also holds the "second printing" of the book that has major differences in conten and layout. According to Jim Lowell, only 10 to 15 copies are extant. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This second printing of the book differs greatly from the first printing and should probably be considered a revision. The Sackner Archive also holds the "first printing" of the book. The title is printed on a single line of the white paper cover in this version. Scope and Contents The cover photograph was taken by Max Roach. At the time of this poem, Julie was Julie Weisberg, a 15 year old Clevelnd Heights acquaintance of d.a. levy.The following is an excerpt from Cleveland Magazine.com in November 2007 about JUlie Weisberg: "Authorities never said exactly which literature prompted levy and Lowell's indictments. But police arrested levy again in late March, confiscated his mimeograph and charged him with five counts of tending to contribute to the delinquency of minors. The charges could have sent levy to prison for up to five years. He was indicted for publishing the 17-year-old Friedman's "Black Revolt" in his anthology "465"; giving a copy of the book to Julie Weisberg, a 15-year-old Cleveland Heights girl; and reading the poem to a Gate audience that included the two teens. "465" was made up of youthful literary experiments of mixed quality "” a delicate poem about two lovers, an overwritten but vivid scene at Adele's Bar, Vietnam War protests, a...
