According to Horvath, "These nine unpublished drafts of 'cleveland undercovers' trace the poem's progression from its single sheet origin to a 16 page manuscript containing sections which were later removed. None of the early versions contained the 'Introduction' which only appeared with the published poem. 'cleveland undercovers' was initially printed by 7 flowers press." Scope and Contents This is a piece that was sent to Bill Wyatt by d.a. levy. Bennett Hassink died in 2008 and his obituary was printed in the Berkeley Daily Planet. Bennett James Hassink, known to his many friends as "Bud," died in Berkeley on Monday Feb. 25, 2008, at the age of 81, from congestive heart failure. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in March 1926, where he was married to Mildred Pugh. Bud and Millie could be considered one of the early "bohemian" couples during the early 1960s. Millie, a talented artisan and jeweler, bore him his first daughter March. Their home on Wadena Street in East Cleveland was always full of interesting people, listening to electronically combined sounds and bits of recorded music that Bud mixed on reel-to-reel tapes, with lots of conversations, philosophical discussions and chess games. The music Bud made was far ahead of the synthesizer music and sounds of the'70s, and it had an ethereal yet melodic quality. He was routinely involved in the Cleveland music...

At the time of this poem, Julie was Julie Weisberg, a 15 year old Clevelnd Heights acquaintance of d.a. levy.The following is an excerpt from Cleveland Magazine.com in November 2007 about JUlie Weisberg: "Authorities never said exactly which literature prompted levy and Lowell's indictments. But police arrested levy again in late March, confiscated his mimeograph and charged him with five counts of tending to contribute to the delinquency of minors. The charges could have sent levy to prison for up to five years. He was indicted for publishing the 17-year-old Friedman's "Black Revolt" in his anthology "465"; giving a copy of the book to Julie Weisberg, a 15-year-old Cleveland Heights girl; and reading the poem to a Gate audience that included the two teens. In the introduction, Golden writes about levy's "The North American Book of the Dead." He states that "this is not only a major epic spiritual hymn, it is one of, if not the major post-modern shamanistic-poetic vision of America written this century. Read it straight through and levy will take you on a trip through not just the times he lived in, but through all time. He was, first and foremost, a writer of space, yet as visionary as his voice was, to this point he has been recognized primarily as a writer of place.' And that place was Cleveland. Golden also contributed an essay, "Portrait of a Young Man Trying to Eat the Sun." There are eight colored photographic reproductions of levy's collages in this book. The collage reproduced on page 99 is held by the Sackner Archive. In addition, several works from the Sackner Archive are reproduced in this book.
