Scope and Contents

The Iowa City Women’s Club records date from 1925 to 1997 and measure 5 linear inches in one box.

The collection has a small amount of administrative materials consisting of one proposed budget and two small paperback issues of the club’s bylaws from 1977 and 1995. Within the club’s bylaws are descriptions of the roles that members had, and the Standing Committees responsibility.

The bulk of the collection is made up of annual announcement booklets. These were prepared from the reports of members of the Executive Board by the President of the club and contain information on past members, budgets, president reports, and calendar events. The booklets span from 1925-1939 and 1969-1997.

Biographical / Historical

The Iowa City Women’s Club (ICWC) affiliated with the General and Iowa Federation of Women’s Clubs since 1922. It consisted of women residing in Iowa City who wanted to do more for Iowa City through community-based work. A main goal of ICWC was growth in membership. There were special projects that members of club committees could take on such as memorial books for members that passed away and giving out vocational training and music camp scholarships. Club meetings provided women an opportunity to socialize, participate in community affairs, and share common interests such as gardening, arts, literature, and social science.
