Scope and Contents This is a copy of Seaman's Ph.D dissertation thesis that was later revised and published in the Series "Studies in fine arts. The avant-garde" by UMI Research Press in 1981, a book that is also held by the Sackner Archive. On pages 150-156, Seaman analyzes Rimbaud's "Voyelles." Seaman devotes Chapter V, pages 179-251, to Mallarme with particular attention to Un Coup de Des. Seaman provides an English translation of Tzara's recipe for making a dadaist poem in Breton's manifestos of Surrealism. Pages from Lacerba, the futurist periodical, are reproduced on pages 118-131. This exhibition was curated by Roberto Antolini for the Trento Biblioteca Comunale and the Bolzano Museum. He contributed one essay "Il Nuovo Libro Futurista" and with Melania Gazzotti a second one titled "Le Sperimentazioni delle Neoavanguardie Nella Seconda Meta del Novecento." A section of the catalogue contains illustrations of artists' books mainly from the 1970's. the last part of the catalogue consists of correspondence between Fedele Azari and Fortunato Depero. Scope and Contents In the words of David A. Ross, director of the Whitney Museum, "This exhibition proposes that as important as Dada was to the growth of American modernism, the ferment of New York played an equally critical role in the continuing evolution of Dada itself." He points out that even though Dada evolved in Zurich and Berlin, few immigrant notions were more quickly or deeply absorbed into American culture, because "American art, like America itself in the beginning of the century, was experiencing an analogous social, intellectual, and moral transformation, and the spirit and purpose of Dada provided a much needed catalyst." The Dada activity in New York centered around the Arensbergs, Duchamp, Picabia and Man Ray. When asked to define Dada, Man Ray echoed the words of Tristan Tzara and said that Dada was a state of mind.
