The Emblem poem of the 16th and 17th century consisted of motto, image and verse. In the classification system utilized by the Sackner Archive, emblem poems are designated Picture Poems and consist of title (motto), image and verse on the same page, i.e., a single poem which if presented as facing pages collection of poems and poetry in a book would be designated an Illustrated Book. This catalogue, the most extensively illustrated book dealing with Russian avant garde books, was published to coincide with the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Curated by Deborah Wye and Margit Rowell, the catalogue is organized into the following sections: Transform the World! 1916-33 and Building Socialism 1924-34. The first section includes Suprematism and the Non-objective Vision, Popular Revolutionalry Imagery, Books for Children, Constructivist Graphic Design and Photography and Photomontage. The second section includes Architecture and Industry, Photography in the Service of Propaganda, Non-official Publications. The collection af Russian Avant-Garde books was a gift from the Judith Rothschild Foundation and was conceived and organized by its trustee, Harvey Shipley Miller. Scope and Contents Using Kitasono as a window on Japanese literature in the twentieth century, John Solt analyzes the relationship of Japanese writers to foreign literary movements and the influences of Japanese writers on world literature. He also provides a critical analysis of Kitasono's poetic working methods with several translations of poems written in Japanese to English. He mentions that in the late 1920s, Katue published "Collection of White Poems" that was translated by Solt. This is a constellation long before Gomringer declared this form, concrete poetry, e.g. white residence - white table - pink noblelady - white distant view - blue sky, etc. Solt records the following. "Other Western poets took notice of the VOU translations. High praise came from Hugh Gordon Porteus, who wrote in Criterion in 1939, "The most fruitful experiments with language are likely to continue to emerge from those who concern themselves with images and their relations, rather than with idle wordspinning. Elisabeth Sussman, the editor, provided the introduction. Certain key texts selected by Greil Marcus have been translated and annotated by Thomas Levin. Debord, in his 1967 study "Society of the Spectacle" articulates his principal theses. Greil Marcus provides a critical essay on Debord's key publication "Memories".
