Scope and Contents
The David Cole Papers collects mail and book art materials from visual artist David Cole (1939-2000). This collection is made up of four series: MAIL ART, CORRESPONDENCE, PUBLICATIONS, and ARTISTS BOOKS, ART OBJECTS, & STAMPS. Due to the nature of mail art, the MAIL ART series contains what would typically be categorized as correspondence. Materials in this series includes mail art organizations' newsletters and publications, exhibit ephemera, mailing lists, and 25 of Cole's scrapbook binders, which have been deconstructed for preservation purposes. This series has file-level indexes of artists. Also included in this series are cassettes, often containing spoken word art, sent to Cole by others. Any correspondence that does not include illustrations, creative writing, specialty stamps, or other artistic material is in the CORRESPONDENCE series. The PUBLICATION series contains mail art publications and Cole's collected serial zines and various publications. The ARTISTS BOOKS, ART OBJECTS, & STAMPS series is made up of works by Cole and by others. The artist books have been transferred to Special Collections' x-collection and can be requested via the InfoHawk+ online catalog. A non-exhaustive index of Cole's artist books can be found in index notes for line items. The series also includes Cole's exlectic rubber stamp collection, wood letterforms, and some art objects. Mail artists with a prominent number of materials in this collection include (non-exhaustive): Cracker Jack Kid, Ryosuke Cohen, K.S. Ernst, Monty Cantsin (an artist's collective), Neoist, Carlo Pittore, Marilyn R. Robinson, Shimamoto Shozo, and David Zack.

Processing Information
Due to the order the materials were received in, both the MAIL ART and CORRESPONDENCE series are sorted by year rather than by artist. MAIL ART's sub-series have indexed folders that list identified artists. Artists have been listed based on how their names are written; due to this, there may be multiple names in a folder index for a single artist (e.g. Chuck Welch and Cracker Jack Kid, or Kathy Ernst and K.S. Ernst). Materials from 1985 to 1988 came to Special Collections pre-sorted alphabetically by artist; these are listed alphabetically under the MAIL ART series. Cole maintained mail art 'scrabooks,' which were binders where he kept his own works as well as works sent to him. There are 25 of these scrapbooks. Cole labeled each of these after the year he started them, however the actual range of materials tends to include the numbered year and the following year (e.g. Mail Art Scrapbook "1984" contains materials from 1984-1985).
