Scope and Contents
This catalogue features 53 essays on international aspects of visual poetry and individual poets. There are several poets cited in the essays whose works are not depicted in the exhibition. The essays deal with such topics as Mantova and visual poetry, political poetry dealing with war, visual poetry objects, futurism and Zaum, musical aspects of visual poetry, the periodical Lotto Poetica, Neoism, Oyvind Fahlstrom, constellations, Emilio Villa, Mario Diacono, Marcel Duchamp, calligraphic aspects of visual poetry, Quebec visual poetry, Carlo Belloli, Portuguese visual poetry, poema processo, Yugoslavian visual poetry, Carlfriedrich Claus, analysis of Brazilian concrete poetry, South American visual poetry, Gruppo 70, Joan Brossa, concrete and visual poetry in Japan, concrete poetry in England, Ezra Pound, e.e. cummings, Lettrisme, visual poetry in Spain, Francesco Conz, and collections of Paolo Berardelli, Francesco Conz, Adriano Parise, and Giuseppe Verzeletti. All of these essays are profusely illustrated with black and white photographic reproductions of book, periodical and exhibition catalogue covers. The most heavily featured reproductions of book and catalogue covers by poets were those of Maurice Lemaitre, Sarenco, Julien Blaine, and Eugenio Miccini. This catalogue includes a section of photographic portraits of important concrete and visual poets. Most periodicals depicted in this catalogue are held by the Sackner Archive except for the following, viz., Full, Il Portico, Voce, Meta, D'Ars, King Kong International, Quindici, la collina, Mohammed, Smo-Oggi, and Merde. The section that features Adriano Parise's collection provides photographic reproductions of standing screens by Tola, Carrrega, Blaine, Noel, Miccini, Sarenco, Aguiar, Groh, Pignotti, Chopin, Williams, Furnival, Crozier, Martini, and Brecht. The covers of the two volumes have identical images but Volume 1 is rendered in black and white while Volume 2 is printed in color. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
