According to Horvath, "These nine unpublished drafts of 'cleveland undercovers' trace the poem's progression from its single sheet origin to a 16 page manuscript containing sections which were later removed. None of the early versions contained the 'Introduction' which only appeared with the published poem. 'cleveland undercovers' was initially printed by 7 flowers press." d.a. levy owned Renegade Press. According to Kent Taylor in a personal communication (1997) to the Sackners, this was the fourth book published by the Renegade Press and the first not written by levy. For Levy's Defense, 1967
The cover depicts silkscreened portrait of levy and includes a handwritten inscription, "25 [cents] for levy's defense." The tipped-in silkscreen print on the page was probably made by levy. The text admonishes the people of Cleveland for the treatment of levy. According to a letter from Alan Horvath, this is the first version of the book that was subsequently published with a different cover/title page. The cover was designed by Tom Kyyss. r.j.s. stands for Robert J. Sigmond, a poet who at age 19 years was incarcerated by the Cleveland authorities for six months because of using marijuana. d.a.levy's poem in this book, "Indictment of the City of Cleveland for Contributing to the Delinquency of Minors" describes that episode. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
Fragments of a Shattered Mirror, 1963
According to Kent Taylor in a personal communication (1997) to the Sackners, this was d.a levy's first book. Further, he believes that "Dave" in the inscription was Dave Williams, a boy friend of Taylor's first wife, levy's cousin, Joan.
