The press launch upstairs at the Ivy seemed to go pretty well...Many more people came than expected. David Attenborough came...and Peter and I were interviewed by many people called Roy with Walkmans and everyone seemed very nice about things...Strange to see an etching of mine in the TV Times, in Time Out, City Limited and the Listener so far....But still no news of process and still no reading of Sir John......

Phillips writes "A TV Dante I to III went out 29th July...Very good reviews the following Sunday and many phone calls and messages to say how much people liked it including one from ??? to say he thought it was the best television he'd ever seen...Almost everyone mentions the appearance od David Attenbourgh. I watched it myself with Sylvia or on my own & was often surprised. It gets better as it goes on but will stilll need a coherent sound track. Something somewhere wrong with the voice track. Still even with this delay it is something to have been on at all and over a million people is pretty good." He described the project as 'A ship wihout a rudder' which seemed pretty accurate. Peter said that David Lynch had toyed with the idea of joining at one point. But beyond that he did not seem to know very much of what was going on. The Bob Peck scripts arrived from Millie & I started toying with them before bedtime. An old task.....a call from Millie who has...

But a real sense of satisfaction to know how things stand at last.. Forty copies. I made Lucy collate one for herself. July XX It now seems certain that a TV Dante is to be the Ch 4 entry to the Italia prize: Oona gave first word when she was asked to do French subtitles for it. Then Ken Thompson mentioned it. A nice irony that they are proud of the project."
